I made the mistake of allowing my former mother in law buy my 8 year old an x-box 360. I did try to talk them out of it, due to all the techie problems that that system has, I was rooting for the PS3. But the 8 year old and his overly doting absentee grandma won out in the end. This was in June. Now, low and behold, the infamous 360 is now boxed up to be sent back to Microsoft for repairs, after what, 7 months of use. Why oh why won't anybody listen to me?

But the PS3 is $400 to $500 and xbox 360 is $350 ... and the Wii is even cheaper. If you're inclined to sticker shock, the Wii and the Xbox look on the surface like a better deal.
But you're right. The PS3 is in my queue of things to buy.
